You Won't Mind the Vague Ending
Hero
Starring: Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Maggie Cheung, Tony Leung, Zhang Ziyi
Directed by: Yimou Zhang

Zhang Yi mou used to direct lesser known stars in “Happy Times” and in his other films, but you have to tip your hat to him for bringing to the screen and directing 5 of the superstars of Chinese cinema. Jet Li (of Once Upon a Time in China fame, and more known in the US for his “Romeo Must Die”, “Kiss of the Dragon” and more recently “The One”), Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung (made some noise in “In the Mood for Love”), Zhang Zi Yi (“Rush Hour 2” and of course, 2001’s Best Foreign Language Film, “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”).

The story centers on the plot of “survival of the fittest” or moreover just like the TV series - Survivor – “alliances”. Nameless, played by Jet Li, recounts in flashbacks how he was able to take the precious swords of 3 of the deadliest assassins out to get the king of Qin. The duels made in various backgrounds, from red autumn leaves, green meadows, white dessert, blue tranquile skies will leave one in shock and awe. Donnie Yen (sky) and Jet Li’s remains to be the most awaited (after their more known duels in “Once Upon a Time in China”). While that of Maggie Cheung (Flying Snow) and Jet Li tops even the best of Hollywood. Tony Leung will be shown in one scene without his moustache and he passes well in his fight scenes albeit awkward and all. Watch out for more swordfights by Zhang Zi Yi and yes, more acting from her. Although star-studded, the movie centers on the Hero, and you will see who he is in the end.
